Was cleaning up some tags a bit and settling into a new layout (and updating my profile because, holy fuck, that thing was horrible) and came across this meme from 2011 and thought it might be fun to see what's changed in five years. So.
What's the last thing you wrote?
Today's RoyEd Week post, the dragon!Roy thing, which is FULL OF SWEAT, BLOOD, AND TEARS. (Actually legit, all of those. Both in the fic, and things I shed in the process of writing it.)
Was it any good?
I CANNOT BE OBJECTIVE ABOUT IT RIGHT NOW. I'M TOO PREJUDICED. I'M JUST GLAD I CAN IGNORE IT FOR A WHILE.
(Reviews so far have been positive? The few I've got.)
What's the first thing you ever wrote that you still have?
Copying this over from the old, 'cause it hasn't changed: Holy... Erm, Senshi Miko. It was an original piece loosely based off of Fushigi Yuugi. It's hand-written. I don't even know why I've kept it. Also, The Children's Study Cottage, which I drew this epic map for. Most of CSC is still handwritten in a notebook, but the map and a re-written prologue are on my computer.
Write poetry?
Used to.
Angsty poetry?
To my shame.
Most fun character you ever wrote?
It's a toss-up between insane!Harry and insane!Luna from Xerosis, and my FMA OC, the Colourway Alchemist.
So...insane characters. They're fun. XD
Most annoying character you ever wrote?
Albus Dumbledore's often given me a lot of trouble, and Hohenheim isn't much better.
Best plot you ever wrote?
Dunno that I really have one I like more than any of the others. I enjoy turning tropes on their heads, though, so those fics? Maybe? Idk
Coolest plot twist you ever wrote?
Yeah, this hasn't changed: WIZARDS ON THE MOON!!
How often do you get writer's block?
Distressingly often. ^^; It happens a lot as I'm approaching the end of a fic, or writing scenes where two characters finally kiss. Fight scenes, sometimes.
How do you fix it?
I've got a bit better (HA) about just forcing my way through it, but I'll often still walk away for a bit and work on something else. Or just, you know, bitch about it to someone. ^^;
Do you type or write by hand?
Typing, hands down. I've even got into typing my notes, in the past few years. I'll still make quick notes – or ones I regularly need to reference while I've got something else open – on post-its (and lose them half the time), and I still keep a notebook and pen by my bed for half-asleep ideas, since that's easier than unlocking the mobile or iPad and blinking past the backlight.
Do you save everything you write?
Yes. I think some of my really old notebooks finally got tossed, but I've made an effort to save everything, even the stuff I'll never post anywhere. Even the abandoned fics I took down from FFN are still on my comp.
Do you ever go back to an old idea long after you abandoned it?
I like that word, 'abandoned'. ^^;
I've started a couple fic rewrites, repurposing old ideas, but they don't usually work out for me.
What's your favourite thing that you've written?
Hrm. As a general rule, I love everything I post, especially in the moment I'm posting it. And then, after four years or so, I look back at it and am horrified that I ever thought it was good, so... XD
What's everyone else's favourite thing that you've written?
Judging by AO3 kudos: Reverti Ad Praeteritum, Stand Against the Moon, Gelosaþ in Écnesse, Xerosis, and The Lightning Strike.
Judging by FFN favourites: Xerosis, Abandon, Broken, Gelosaþ in Écnesse, and Stand Against the Moon.
Hmm.
Do you ever show people your work?
Not so much irl, but fandom, yes, of course.
Who's your favourite constructive critic?
I don't really have any, tbh, not any more. ^^;
Did you ever write a novel?
Original? Haven't finished one yet, no.
Fanfiction? How about 'on a regular basis'? *cries forever*
Have you ever written fantasy, sci-fi, or horror?
Fantasy, all the time, pretty much. Sci-fi...not a lot? Horror, HA, no.
Ever written romance or teen angsty drama?
I occasionally attempt romantic scenes? But I'm too much fond of characters who don't do romance, so... XD
Ahahahahahahah.... Angsty drama is always and forever my speciality.
What's one genre you have never written, and probably never will?
Mystery and horror.
How many writing projects are you working on right now?
....I don't want to think about it, okay? Can we skip this one? I'm skipping this one.
Do you want to write for a living?
I would love to write for a living.
Have you ever written something for a magazine or newspaper?
Erm, I got a couple poems published in my high school's creative magazine/calendar, and I did submit something for a fandom 'zine ages ago, but the project ended up falling through.
Have you ever won an award for your writing?
I got a scholarship for it, does that count?
Ever written something in script or play format?
For a creative writing class, I believe so, yes. But bugger-all if I know what happened to it, or what it was about.
What is your favourite word?
I don't, necessarily, have one. I do still like 'zyxt', tbh.
Do you ever write based on yourself?
I'm a firm believer in writing a little bit of myself in all of my pieces. Not, necessarily, as an OC (though I have done that; even had two versions of myself in one fic, once XD), but, like, a character's reaction to an event, or a character loving a particular food or colour. Or, like with Dragon's Gold, Ed ended up with my sexuality.
So, you know, pieces of me, sure, those're always going to show up in a work, but I haven't written any OCs based on me in...a long time.
Where do you get ideas for your characters?
Heh. The canon. XD
Original characters... Usually, I just need someone to fill a position that a canon character can't, so I give them the basics I need for that scene and, sometimes – way too often, for my FMA OCs – they'll fill me in on their backstory and stuff all on their own. Especially characters who show up more than once.
Do you ever write based on your dreams?
A few times, sure.
Do you prefer happy endings, sad endings, or cliff-hangers?
As a writer, cliff-hangers and sad endings tend to result in more reviews, if only because readers like to yell, so I do enjoy writing those. But I tend toward happy endings, any more, probably because that's usually what I'm looking for when I go looking for fic, something that will make me smile for a little bit.
Have you ever written anything based on an artwork you've seen?
I...yes. Once. And I'll end up writing at least one more piece this summer, for the FMA Fandom Challenge.
Are you concerned with spelling and grammar as you write?
YES. My inner editor never shuts up.
Ever write something entirely in chatspeak?
Copying this over from the old, 'cause it hasn't changed: NO. And I never intend to. I don't read stuff in chatspeak, either.
Does music help you write?
Yeah. I can't really write in silence, it's distracting, so I do need music to write.
Are people surprised and confused when they find out you write well?
Not so far as I know? I've got a number of reviews over the years from people praising my good spelling or grammar or the character's voices, and sometimes people will thank me for doing one of those things so well? But no one's ever come flat out and said, to my face, 'I didn't expect you to be a good writer!'. ^^;
I mean, too, most people I guess discover me through my writing, and most people I become friendly with irl, either don't take long to find out I'm a writer, or it just never comes up, so... *shrugs*
